London, 20 May 2009: Twilight, the teenage vampire movie which proved a hit at the box office, looks set to be one of the biggest selling DVDs of 2009, even eclipsing the record DVD sales of Mamma Mia seen last year.
This is according to shopping comparison site, Kelkoo, which has received a huge amount of searches for the Twilight DVD in the past few weeks. The battle for DVD supremacy in 2009 is going to be tough considering the number of big budget movie releases this year such as The Wrestler, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Star Trek and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. However, current search volumes combined with book, DVD and music sales means this could be the year of the vampire as Twilight smashes all previous records
The second film in the series, entitled The Twilight Saga: New Moon, is due to be released in the UK just before Christmas on November 27, which will reignite the hype and drive even more sales as the year comes to a close.
Lloyd Price, Marketing Director of Kelkoo UK, comments:
“Twilight has made a successful transition from its beginnings as a book with a mainly teenage cult following, to a mainstream movie franchise which has attracted a large volume of soundtrack CD and DVD sales. Twilight’s initial popularity in the US appears to be gathering momentum across Europe at a fast pace with a large fan base also in the UK. Current search volumes for Twilight related products are only fractionally behind those we received for Mamma Mia last year which leads us to believe demand will equate into big sales for retailers. It?s on course to be the DVD of the year.”
The success of the franchise can be clearly seen both in the UK and US. Play.com’s current UK Book Top Sellers includes no less than four Twilight titles in the top five best selling books and the Billboard top 200 best selling CD Albums in the USA currently features Twilight at position five after it peaked at number one and remained in the Top 200 for 26 consecutive weeks.
